Iran, Oman Reach Broad Agreement on Strait of Hormuz Framework, Says Lawmaker

An Iranian lawmaker says talks between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz are close to reaching a final agreement.

Speaking in a televised interview, Hassan Ghashghavi said a general framework for the negotiations has already been agreed upon. He added that the final agreement still needs approval from Iran’s top leadership before it is officially announced.

Ghashghavi said officials are also preparing a joint statement that will explain the main points of the agreement.

He said Iran believes its role in managing the Strait of Hormuz is supported by international law and past agreements. According to him, the country’s actions in the waterway are based on legal rules and international maritime regulations.

Speaking about the United States, Ghashghavi claimed that Washington did not fully honour an earlier understanding reached with Iran. He alleged that pressure from other countries and groups influenced the US position after the agreement.

He also claimed that the United States later increased diplomatic and military pressure in the region, while Iran continued to follow its commitments.

Ghashghavi said Iran wants to manage the entry and exit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz and oversee traffic in the waterway. He added that charging fees for navigation and environmental protection is a normal international practice.

However, he said this does not mean the Strait of Hormuz will reopen immediately. According to Ghashghavi, the United States must first meet other commitments under the Islamabad Agreement, including sanctions relief and other obligations.

He also said there is strong coordination between Iran’s government, military and diplomatic institutions, adding that all national bodies are working together under the country’s leadership.

Ghashghavi concluded by saying Iran will continue to make decisions based on its national interests while pursuing diplomatic efforts.
