India’s foreign policy is facing new challenges as its continued energy ties with Russia come under pressure from the United States and other global powers. The Modi government’s decision to maintain large-scale imports of Russian oil despite international sanctions has created difficulties in balancing energy needs with growing diplomatic and economic concerns.
According to international media reports, a bill passed in the US Senate could potentially increase tariffs on Indian goods by up to 100 percent due to India’s purchase of Russian energy. US Senator Richard Blumenthal has criticized India’s policy, saying the country has become a major focus of the proposed measures.
The situation has placed the Indian government in a difficult position, as it tries to protect energy security while avoiding possible economic consequences from higher US tariffs.
Concerns over Russian oil imports have also been acknowledged by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, as energy analysts warn that a weaker rupee could push inflation higher and impact ordinary citizens.
